 There are two types of healthcare accessible in Mauritius: Public and Private healthcare. Together, these system serves locals in Mauritius, expatriates, and tourists alike. Whether you need routine checkups, specialised or emergency treatment, understanding how healthcare operates in Mauritius will help you choose the right option.

When it comes to access, areas such as Port Louis, Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, and Grand Baie have easier access to healthcare. However, the island also has community health centres throughout to ensure broader care. However, although Mauritians speak Creole, the majority of medical staff in Mauritius are fluent in French and English, which facilitates communication with not only locals but international patients as well. 

Public Healthcare in Mauritius

The public healthcare system is managed by the Ministry of Health and Wellness and provides free services to all Mauritian citizens, including government-run hospitals, health centres, and community clinics.  Some services include:

  • Emergency Treatment

  • Surgery and Hospitalization

  • Vaccination

While these services are accessible to residents, they often come with longer waiting times. Public healthcare is generally not available to foreign nationals, who are advised to use private services.
